(German version below) After the two previous singles ‘Circle Of The Scythe’ and ‘The Famine Years’, The Very End are now striking an unusually calm note with ‘Solanum’. Like its predecessor, the black-and-white music video was shot at the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, a World Heritage Site.

“The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is so diverse that we shot two videos that are visually completely different,”

says guitarist René Bogdanski. He was once again in action both in front of and behind the camera. Bogdanski produced the video together with his team from the agency Social Media Konzepte. The location is the Zeche Zollverein World Heritage Site in Essen and one of the most famous landmarks of industrial culture in the Ruhr region. The single will be released via the label Apostasy Records.

A musical journey into the darkest inner self

The cover artwork for the current single was created by Björn Gooßes also known as Killustrations.

“The Solanum artwork is certainly one of the most minimalist I’ve ever done,”

says Gooßes.

“I wanted to depict the shadows I sing about through a close-up of an eye. Because the darkest paths, that everyone has to tread from time to time, often lie within ourselves.”

The lyrics pick up on the melancholy mood of the music.

“It’s definitely the calmest song we’ve done so far. Unlike usual with us, Björn sings melodically throughout this time. We also experimented with the guitar sound for the calm parts and are totally happy with the result,”

says Bogdanski.

The Very End present new shirts for the ‘Solanum’ release

The Solanum artwork is also available as T-shirts and girlie shirts in the band’s official online store. Gooßes:

“For the shirt motif, I added a little gimmick to the pupil. It’s the centerpiece of an edition of ‘The Canon of Eclipses‘, in German: ‘Canon der Finsternisse’, by Theodor Ritter von Oppolzer from 1887. This is a compilation of solar and lunar eclipses between 1207 BC and 2162 AD.”

The ‘Solanum’ video also takes up the eye, the canon and solar eclipses visually.

In the studio, the band relies on proven collaboration

The band recorded the current singles together with Cornelius Rambadt (Sodom, Darkness, Disbelief…). He was already behind the mixing desk for the albums Zeitgeist and Vs. Life he sat behind the mixing desk. As with the last albums and singles, Dennis Koehne (Caliban, Lacuna Coil, Orden Ogan…) was responsible for the mastering.

The Very End veröffentlichen neue Single und Video ‘Solanum’

Nach den beiden Vorgänger-Singles ‘Circle Of The Scythe’ und ‘The Famine Years’ schlagen The Very End nun mit Solanum’ ungewöhnlich ruhige Töne an. Das in Schwarz-Weiß gehaltene Musikvideo entstand, wie auch schon das Vorgängervideo, im Weltkulturerbe Zeche Zollverein.

„Das Gelände der Zeche Zollverein ist so vielseitig, dass wir direkt zwei Videos gedreht haben, die sich optisch komplett unterscheiden“,

sagt Gitarrist René Bogdanski, der auch dieses Mal sowohl vor als auch hinter der Kamera in Aktion war. Das Video hat er zusammen mit seinem Team von der Agentur Social Media Konzepte produziert. Die Location ist das Weltkulturerbe Zeche Zollverein in Essen und eines der bekanntesten Wahrzeichen der Industriekultur im Ruhrgebiet. Die Single erscheint über das Label Apostasy Records.

Eine musikalische Reise in das dunkelste Innere

Das Cover-Artwork zur aktuellen Single stammt von Björn Gooßes/Killustrations.

„Das Solanum-Artwork ist sicher eines der minimalistischsten, die ich je gemacht habe“,

so Gooßes.

„Ich wollte die Schatten, die ich im Song besinge, durch ein Close-Up eines Auges darstellen. Denn die dunkelsten Pfade, die jeder ab und an beschreiten muss, liegen oft in einem selbst.“

Der Text greift die melancholische Stimmung der Musik auf.

„Es außerdem der ruhigste Song, den wir bisher gemacht haben. Anders als sonst bei uns, singt Björn dieses Mal durchweg melodisch. Auch beim Gitarrensound für die ruhigen Parts haben wir ein wenig experimentierten sind total glücklich mit dem Ergebnis“,

so Bogdanski.

The Very End präsentieren neue Shirts zum „Solanum“-Release

Das Solanum-Artwork ist als T-Shirts und Girlie online im offiziellen Bandshop erhältlich.

„Bei dem Shirtmotiv habe ich ein kleines Gimmick in die Pupille eingefügt. Und zwar das Kernstück einer Ausgabe der ‘Canon der Finsternisse‘ von Theodor Ritter von Oppolzer aus dem Jahr 1887.“

Dabei handelt es sich um eine Zusammenstellung von Sonnen- und Mondfinsternissen zwischen 1207 vor Christus und 2162 nach Christus. Auch das Solanum-Video greift das Auge, den Canon und Sonnenfinsternisse visuell auf.
